What does reflexology feel like?
I have quite gentle touch so it shouldn't hurt. I work mostly on the soles & top of your feet and around your ankles. Sometimes there is pressure, it's a bit like a massage using my fingers and thumbs to 'walk' around your feet.
Is reflexology painful?
Generally, no, but there may be areas on your feet which correspond to an area of imbalance in your body – say part of your spine if you have back problems. I will work within your tolerance in these areas – usually it subsides with treatment. However, often, even though I can feel a ‘grittiness’ on your feet – it isn’t painful for you.
How long does a reflexology treatment last?
Your first treatment, which involves me taking some medical history from you and what has bought you to seek treatment will last up to 90 minutes. It might be shorter than that but shouldn’t be longer. Follow on treatments are around an hour.
How many treatments will I need/how long before I feel the effects?
It depends on how long you have had the problem, issue
How often will I need to come and will I need more than one treatment?
We make that decision together. If you have a long term condition I will usually recommend two or three treatments quite close together (say a week apart) then if it is helping move those treatments further apart until we reach a frequency that suits your lifestyle while keep the issue you have come with within your tolerance.
How long before I feel positive effects?
That depends. If you have had a particular issue for a long time your body will have done its best to reduce the impact of it by adjusting. This can mean that you have changed your posture or way of walking or sleeping so you can ‘live’ with it. These adjustments can take a while to unravel. I will discuss what I find with you at the end of each treatment and possibly discuss some things you can do (or to try and stop doing) to help your body adjust. Each treatment builds on the last so you should feel your particular issue and your wellbeing improving after each treatment
Should I wash my feet before I come?
Generally, no unless you feel they need it (after a long day at work on your feet). I do have a bowl which I can fill with water so you can wash your feet if that feels more comfortable for you.
Do I need to lie down for treatment?
I have a reclining chair which is really comfortable and tips back so you are semi-reclined. It’s pretty easy to get into and is supportive. If you have a problem with lying reclined I can sit on a lower chair so you don’t need to be tipped back very far.
My feet are really ticklish
My touch is quite firm but not painful. I find people don’t have an issue with ticklishness.
What should I wear?
Something loose and comfortable. The aim, as well as treating any issues I can help with, is for you to get to the end of the treatment feeling relaxed and calm.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes, absolutely. No-one else sees the records I keep which consist of a medical history, what you would like to get out of reflexology, and what I find as I explore your feet. The records are kept in a locked cabinet in my home when not in use in the treatment room.
Any after effects to expect?
You may feel thirsty and it’s important to drink at least 2 glasses of (preferably) water or any other non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic fluid in addition to your usually fluid intake. I have glasses in the treatment room and a water supply but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
Most people have a really refreshing and deep sleep on the night of a reflexology treatment. Some people fall asleep during a treatment. Most often a treatment induces a conscious but deeply relaxed state where you are free of intrusive thoughts but still awake.
